Our Top Release of 2025: Rosalía's Lux Takes the Number One Position.

On the surface, Lux may look more like a difficult academic examination rather than the latest pop project by a musician whose previous hit featured an international pop icon. Divided into 4 different movements and voiced in thirteen tongues, this is a breathtaking symphonic album investigating female mystery, spiritual transcendence, and bodily transformation, frequently through the perspective of various female saints. The end of a love affair—a theme handled with grounded honesty elsewhere—is shot upwards here, carried by the lush presence of a full orchestra and contributions from a Pulitzer-winning songwriter within a vast roll call of collaborators. The pure ambition by itself makes the efforts of other pop stars seem quite laughable.

Transcending Academic Pretense

The fact that this album manages to transcend dry academic chin-stroking is almost miraculous, and full credit belonging to Rosalía. While it's not her first project to fuse historical sounds with the present, its ambitions are far higher here, and the tightrope walk far more pronounced. What really elevates this fourth album, outside of its multilayered tunes, dense compositions, and inherent theatricality, proves to be an essential sense of fun. Similar to the iconic artist at her height, there is a captivating sense to the vocalist's singing that pulls the listener into its whirlwind. Even when she's tearing hearts in two, the listener still want to be alongside her through the journey.

A Signature Example of Exuberance

That exuberant spirit comes forth clearly during a stunning Italian song inspired by a saint. It bathes in a sorrowful melancholy over several moments. Then, everything falls silent, to reveal there's a spontaneous laugh followed by a declaration prior to a comically over-the-top orchestral crescendo crashes down like comedic impact. The song immediately shifts into the frenetic track featuring galloping strings, an imposing choir, and a surprise appearance from none other than herself.

"The charm of Lux is that the listener never quite understand—or even want to predict—what it is going to next."

Almost each track concludes in a totally distinct place from how it began. A track examines the transient trappings of fame with a featherlight symphony only to disintegrating in electronic cacophony. Another, a song echoing the artist's earlier trap-infused style begins out moody and brooding, featuring prowling vocals, until fluttering traditional handclaps and a heavenly choir arrive to smooth its jagged corners.

The Bridge Between Experiment and Pop

A key balancing act on the album is straddling the gap of bold experimentation and broad accessibility. This is little coincidence that it has become her highest-charting work to crack the Top 5 of major charts: its heart contains a collection of truly catchy hits. A song performed primarily in English builds on a chorus that feels to gather increasingly nagging melodies while it spins upward. This trick is echoed on another expansive ballad that expands and constricts, intertwining layered melodies as a complex tapestry.

  • A waltz-like number charms via its playful, theatrical drama and a chant-along hook.
  • In its words, it aligns the pop culture impact of other heartbreak anthems, eviscerating an ex- lover described as an "emotional terrorist".
  • Across the album, the vocals carry a painted-on edge, akin to a fairy-tale figure hiding a knife: "Gold medal in being a motherfucker / You've the podium of letdown."

A Maximalist Feast for the Ears

This album represents popular music on a maximalist scale, a hungry grasp for high artistry amid of looming AI-generated blankness. It rejects self-absorption for sublime transcendence, creating a dramatic drama that masterfully controls its own built-in ridiculousness. This is a deep well of hidden treasure that requires patience to fully mine but doesn't feels like hard work. Where some big pop albums of the year seemed like feasting on scraps, Lux is a sumptuous feast at which the guests around it, perhaps intoxicated on sacred drink, flutter from conversations about historical figures, the galvanizing feeling of heartbreaking sadness, and common stories about useless partners. It is a contemporary theatrical production from music's truly restlessly creative practitioner.
