Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.

The ex-president was convicted of planning a military coup in the ninth month and sentenced more than a 27-year term in incarceration, but he continued under home detention pending court reviews.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after fresh information were revealed.

This included trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a call for a public vigil that could "allow for a chance to flee".

Court Filing Details Escape Risks

In a paperwork permitting the arrest, Justice Moraes said intelligence from the facility tracking Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the one-time head of state's plan to remove the electronic ankle bracelet to guarantee victory in his getaway".

This, it said, would be made easier by the chaos caused by the gathering called by his child.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on last Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the Top Court to allow him to serve his whole jail sentence under home confinement, with tracking devices.

They also requested that he be permitted to leave his home for medical treatment, saying he required frequent medical attention for lung conditions and other ailments.

Context of Sentencing

Bolsonaro was found guilty of heading a scheme aimed at keeping him in power after he failed to win the 2022 election to his left-wing rival, Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he knew of a plot which included plans to assassinate Lula and his running partner, Geraldo Alckmin, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the High Court judge who has been managing his judicial proceedings.

The plot was thwarted because it didn't receive the backing of the army and air force commanders. Lula was took office without issue on 1 January 2023.

But a seven days after, on 8 January, numerous his backers invaded and destroyed public facilities in the federal district, the capital city.

The law enforcement intervened and around fifteen hundred individuals were detained.

The judges found that the demonstrators had been encouraged by him whose scheme, they said, was for the country's army to intervene, restore order and reinstate his authority.
